About

Kathryn D’Elia is a twin cities based practicing artist, residing in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. She attended Douglas Anderson School for the Arts, and Flagler College for undergrad before moving to Seattle in 2012 to complete a graduate degree at the University of Washington in their Drawing and Painting program. She brings her attachment to storms, Spanish moss, and sea life with her to the midwest.

Kathryn has been teaching drawing and painting classes to all age groups since 2009. She taught drawing courses at the University of Washington during and after grad school. She has also run workshops for special projects at arts non-profits, independent-study-oriented painting classes for adults, drawing classes for kids, theory lectures for adults, and since 2017, has been an instructor at Perpich Center for Arts Education, a state run public arts high school in Golden Valley, MN. In 2023, she was promoted to Studio Arts Department Chair. Recently, The All Star Quilt Guild benefitted from her color theory lecture, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts from materials she has contributed to a curriculum for tours with high school students.

Her work ranges from realism-focused pieces to invented abstract forms, vast collages, and playful pop culture content. She appreciates the beauty in the grotesque as much as the sublime in the mundane. A growing number of her pieces are mixtures of the experiences of fear and wonder, where they meet and where they blend.
